Hello, and welcome to Sunny in Korea!
My name is Sunny, and I live in Sokcho, a beautiful coastal city on the east coast of South Korea.
This is my very first post, and I am excited to introduce my hometown to travelers from around the world.
I am not a professional tour guide. I am simply a local resident who loves Sokcho and wants to share the places, stories, and experiences that make this city special.
I started this blog because I wanted to introduce the Sokcho that I know and love — not only the famous attractions that many visitors already know, but also the local stories, everyday places, and peaceful moments that are often missed.
Through Sunny in Korea, I hope to share Sokcho from the perspective of someone who actually lives here.
Discover Sokcho, Korea
For many visitors, Sokcho is one of the most popular coastal destinations in South Korea, where the East Sea, beautiful beaches, Seoraksan National Park, traditional markets, fishing ports, and historic temples come together.
During summer vacation season, especially in August, the city becomes especially lively. The beaches are filled with visitors, the roads become busy with travelers, and the entire city shows how loved this coastal destination is.
However, Sokcho is more than just a popular vacation spot. It is a city filled with memories and stories from generations of Korean travelers.
Since the 1970s, Seoraksan has been one of the most popular school trip destinations in Korea. Many middle and high school students visited Seoraksan as part of their school excursions, and today many adults still remember their youthful memories of hiking the mountain, staying in local accommodations, and experiencing the beauty of the area for the first time.
Because of this long history, Seoraksan continues to attract hikers and nature lovers throughout the year. The guesthouses and accommodations around the mountain have remained an important part of Sokcho's travel culture.
A City Continuing to Grow
Sokcho has experienced significant changes in recent years.
After the opening of the Seoul–Yangyang Expressway in 2016, accessibility to Sokcho, Yangyang, and Goseong improved greatly. Since then, more visitors have discovered the beauty of the East Coast, and new investments have brought more modern accommodations, including high-end hotels and resorts, to the region.
Sokcho is also preparing for another major transformation. The Donghae Bukbu Line railway is planned to connect Sokcho with Jejin in Goseong, and the Dongseo Express Railway connecting Seoul, Chuncheon, and Sokcho is also under development.
These transportation improvements are expected to bring even more visitors and create new opportunities for the region.
Even today, Sokcho has a strong flow of visitors throughout the year. During peak seasons, the city becomes extremely busy, and even during quieter months, local residents often avoid popular areas such as Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market on weekends because of the large number of visitors.
This is the unique character of Sokcho — a small coastal city that continues to attract people from across Korea and around the world.
