Welcome to Sunny in Korea!

When people talk about visiting Yangyang, the first thing that usually comes to mind is Surfyy Beach, one of Yangyang's best-known surfing beaches. But here is the magic of traveling here: right next to this trendy, high-energy hotspot sits Hajodae, a stunning coastal landmark where you get multiple views in one stop—featuring a panoramic observatory, a historic pavilion, and a charming white lighthouse.

Living in Sokcho, I visit Yangyang very often. While Surfyy Beach draws travelers in out of sheer curiosity, stepping just a little further reveals why Hajodae has naturally soared in popularity alongside it. It delivers the best of both worlds: modern coastal vibes right next to deep-rooted Korean history.

Instead of a typical tourist checklist, I want to share the true charm of Hajodae through a local's eyes, including its fascinating history, practical bus schedules from Sokcho and Yangyang, and the ultimate walking route.

1. The History and Origin of Hajodae

Long before surfboards and beach cafes took over the coastline, Hajodae held a permanent spot in Korean history. If you grew up learning Korean history or school curricula, the name Hajodae is likely already familiar.

The name Hajodae carries a deep historical pedigree dating back to the founding of the Joseon Dynasty. It is famously named after two key figures and founding meritorious subjects of the dynasty: Ha Ryun (河崙) and Jo Jun (趙浚). Both statesmen spent time living in seclusion and enjoying the natural splendor of this coastal cliff area, and their respective surnames—'Ha (河)' and 'Jo (趙)'—were combined to create the name Hajodae.

Today, Hajodae's recent surge in fame isn't just about its ancient roots; it thrives because of its modern proximity to Surfyy Beach. Travelers come for the trendy surf culture and stay to discover centuries-old Korean heritage sitting right around the corner.

2. How to Get to Hajodae from Sokcho and Yangyang

Hajodae is easy to reach whether you are coming from central Sokcho or downtown Yangyang.

  • From Sokcho: Head first to the Yangyang Intercity Bus Terminal, or travel via connecting routes down National Route 7, then catch a local intercity bus heading toward Hajodae.

3. Local's Ultimate Walking Course: From Surfyy Beach to Hajodae Lighthouse

If you want to experience the absolute best half-day itinerary, follow this seamless local walking route:

Step 1. Arrival & Walk to the Beach

Get off at the Hajwangjeong-ri (Hajodae) Bus Stop. It is about a 956-meter walk, or roughly a 14-minute stroll, down to Hajodae Beach.

Step 2. Experience Surfyy Beach

Connect directly to Surfyy Beach, which shares a massive, continuous coastline with Hajodae Beach. Spend 1 to 2 hours soaking in the exotic, vibrant mood, taking photos with iconic art installations, and watching surfers ride the East Sea waves.

Step 3. Visit the Hajodae Observatory

Walk southward along the coast to catch stunning panoramic views at the Hajodae Observatory.

Step 4. Pavilion and Lighthouse

Continue further down to explore the historic Hajodae Pavilion, where Ha Ryun and Jo Jun once rested, gaze at the famous Pine Tree of National Anthem fame clinging to the cliffside rocks, and visit the clean, white Hajodae Lighthouse.

Step 5. Return Trip

Head back toward the Hajwangjeong-ri Bus Stop. The return walk from the lighthouse area is about 1.1 km, or roughly a 16-minute walk, before catching your return bus.

4. Visitor Information & Essential Tips

  • Admission Fee: Free. The pavilion, lighthouse, observatory, and beaches are open to the public at no charge.
  • What to Bring: Comfortable walking shoes or sneakers are a must since you will be walking along sandy shores and wooden boardwalk stairs.
  • Light Jacket: Bring a light windbreaker or jacket because coastal sea breezes can feel chilly even on clear days.
